Getting the basics right


Formal medical education in the UK is devoid of any teaching on the business of private medical practice and many practitioners still regard it as a taboo subject.  Sadly, the lack of legal peer-to-peer discussion on the subject has made medics an easy target for other stakeholders in the industry of private medicine.  Furthermore, ignorance of the very basics of business may end up costing otherwise excellent clinicians a lost fortune in unnecessary expenses and taxes.  
This is all preventable.

I am a consultant eye surgeon, not a formally-trained business adviser, although I have provided sought informal advice to a large & increasing number of my colleagues - locally, nationally and internationally - on their private practices. Nor am I an accountant, although I have engaged a top accountant to provide you a financial perspective from a non-clinical viewpoint, as well as a leading light in the world of corporate branding to discuss steps towards attracting high-paying clients. While you will be hopefully be inspired to action from some of what you read, you will always need to take professional and local advice on all aspects before you proceed.

What you read on this site is essentially a synthesis of my own experiences, observations, mistakes and views. There are many ways of running successful practices and you should take time to consider the pros and cons of many different options before taking the plunge.

Above all, stay legal. Ensure you are appropriately insured, appropriately registered and keep your colleagues and the NHS onside.
